No doubt that Greeks have a rare opportunity to go through to next round. Long time ago, I expressed my doubts about the philosophy of the coach Fernando Santos regarding to his tactics. In my opinion, depending on the qualities of the players and their temperament and form, the appropriate tactics and players should be used.
To be more specific, I have always believed that formation 4-3-2-1 is absolutely wrong for the Greeks. Specially when Mr Santos trusts the position of number 6 to player Katsouranis (middle field defensive player). No doubt he is a great player but he is in a very poor condition. Moving on to the choices of Salpingtidis and Gekas, what can I say....... I am speechless. These players again are in a poor condition and with Samaras wasted on the left wing, the Greeks are no threat and there is no player to create in the middle field. I was surprised to see during the game of Colombia Mr Santos to substitute the Gekas and Salpingtidis and he kept them out of the squad also against the team of Japan. What about Katsouranis? Once again he trusted him with the position of number 6 and we have been awarded with poor performance and a red card. Is it coincidence that after the red card of Katsouranis the team played better? I don't think so.....
Greeks can play the game they know to play better. We do not have powerful middle field line to trust 3 middle field players but what we do have are powerful wingers and central forwards.
My first 11 for today would be: Goalkeeper Kapino, Left back defender Tzavelas, centre defenders Manolas and Papastathopoulos, right back defender Torosidis, Defensive middle field players Maniatis and Kone a bit forward, Left winger Holebas, right wing Fetfatzidis. I would give to Samaras a ''free role'' of Supportive Striker and Forward Mitroglou. 4-4-1-1 the formation I would pick today.
I hope to be wrong, because if Karagounis and Salpingidis start the game, it will not turn out well.
Both teams to score is my prediction with scores 1-1 or 2-1 for Greece. Best of luck and let's hope that Mr Santos, will not blow up the game again.
